Weekend sports report

This past weekend was rather busy and eventful. We played in our first softball tournament of the year, but unfortunately we only won 1 game (out of 3). It isn’t as if we played poorly, we just were overmatched by teams who may not have been exactly “D” level. One team was clearly not in the proper tournament, they had 8 home runs (6 for outs, of course)! On a personal note, I was, according to Casey, “on fire”! I did very well at the plate, hitting 11 for 13 for the day. The only thing I did not get was a homerun, but I am not upset with my performance at all.

And the other big news of the weekend was the NFL draft. I had mixed thoughts about it. I am happy that Ben Roethlisberger went to Pittsburgh, there could have been a lot worse places for him to go to (Arizona, Cleveland, San Diego, etc). Now instead he goes to a team with a history of success, where they will actually try to win. And he surely will not be expected to step in as the starter right away, Tommy Maddox will at least be decent for the Steelers… for awhile, anyway. If he had gone to the Chargers he probably would have been starting right away, and that worked oh so well when they had Ryan Leaf. Granted, I’m not a huge Steelers fan, and it will be tough seeing Big Ben play against the Bengals twice a year when I’ll have to root against his team, but at least he didn’t go to a team I hate. Speaking of the Bengals, I’m not sure what to think of their draft. They did great getting so many draft choices, but I do have to wonder if they used them effectively. I didn’t agree with choosing Chris Perry in the first round at all, heck I think they should have waited on a running back. As for the rest of the players… well, I’m no expert on the college game and prospects, so we’ll just have to see how they turn out. Marvin Lewis is publicly happy about this draft, so I will have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He has earned that after last year’s performance.
