New softball team

I was quite unsure if I would have a softball team this year.  The first problem was that Queen City softball complex (where I have played for years) sold their land for commercial development.  We had known this since the end of last season, so we already knew that we would need to find a new place to play.  The second problem occurred early this year.  Brian, our manager the last few years, was laid off from his job.  That meant that Andy would not see him anymore or keep in contact with him.  Because of that, the team is effectively disbanded.  Sure, Brian may keep some of the team together, but we no longer really keep in contact with him, and after this news we really weren’t expecting to hear about a continuance of the team as we knew it.

The good news is yesterday at bowling Nick informed me that Andy and I would be able to play softball on this new team that his friend started up.  I don’t really know many of the details other than where we will be playing, but that doesn’t matter – at least I will get to play ball.  I am looking forward to this as a new start.  I did like playing on my old team, and I got along fairly well with most of the guys.  However, I was getting tired of some of the crap that went on with that team.  The most annoying thing was Brian’s constant need to get more and more players while shoving others aside in an attempt to put together a "championship team".  That caused strife with some current players, and of course led to playing time issues with the same guys.  For the most part I got enough playing time, but there were times when Brian’s supposed balanced rotation was bullshit.  I’m sure he is a reason that Ray was never asked back to play.  I really enjoyed having Ray on the team, he is one of my best friends after all.  But, his easy going attitude and hard effort was rewarded with Brian pushing him aside for some "superstar" that lasted a year or two on the team before getting kicked off.  It happened every year – Andy, Danny, Sample, Brian, Nick, and I were the only ones who were able to stay on the team since 2000.  Heck, even Nick was supposedly kicked off for one year when there was some interpersonal drama going on between player wives.  So, with the approach of spring I can look forward to a new team at a new ballpark.

The drama added an element that I wanted nothing to do with. There’s been a bit of it the past several years. It hasn’t been horrible, but it will be nice to play without it. We ain’t the Bengals, man, this is the beer leagues! Let’s just play ball!

Yeah, I had to withhold my rant on Queen City selling out. It really sucks that they had to sell out to some developer. Isn’t West Chester overbuilt already? Green space is so underrated these days. Instead we get miles and miles of concrete, boring box stores, and other crap that will sit in decay 20 years from now when another area is the new “hot suburb”. I rather liked playing at Queen City – good fields, fairly close location. As I recall our new fields are pretty good, but I haven’t played there since 1999 or so.
