Introducing Emilia Ruth

The question is do I want to be a typical geek in this announcement. Do I want to say "A new process has spawned." Or, do I want to state "Version 2 has been released". Any of those phrases are kind of cliche when we developer types have a new baby. So, I decided to forgo that and just announce that she is here. I know, very "edgy". Without much ado... our daughter, Emilia Ruth, was born on Thursday, May 28th at 6:53 PM. She weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces at birth, and was...

Not quite dead yet

It appears that Graffiti, like this blog, isn’t quite dead yet . Sure, the coroner knocks on the door from time to time trying to drum up business, but both seem to be hanging on. After Telligent had layoffs in February, there was much speculation on the Graffiti Forums that perhaps Telligent was about to jettison Graffiti. I still have some doubt until the next version is released, and I had been considering alternatives based on the lack of information - but for now I will be able to hold...

My experience at Central Ohio Day of .NET 2009

Over the last year or so I have tried to make a better effort at getting more involved with the developer community. Although I have been developing software professionally for 10 years, and I have done a fairly good job of keeping my skills updated, I had been amiss in keeping up with other professionals outside of my usual crowd. I’ve been going to the Cincinnati .NET User Group (CINNUG) meetings, but on Saturday I went to my first event – the Central Ohio Day of .NET (CODODN). I didn’t...

Learning WPF and Silverlight

I’ve had more free time lately, and because of that I have been able to catch up on some of the newer offerings in the .Net world. I started with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) for a couple of reasons: Silverlight is a subset, so I figured if I want to learn both I may as well look at WPF first. Even though the Lebowskis administration functionality is web-based, it seems that creating a new administration application with WPF would be a good example application to try out. I didn’t...

Extending Windows Live Photo Gallery

Ah yes, readers, more talk about the photo gallery. If you find this boring, you can go read about the Super Bowl bound Arizona Cardinals (I feel like I've entered another dimension as I type this). Anyway, I rambled blogged about my digital photography workflow back in October and mentioned that Microsoft was working on a new release of their Live Photo Gallery . I re-imaged my laptop a couple of weeks ago; because of this I had to get the newer version. And so far, I like it even better than I...

New photo gallery

For those reader(s) who have followed this site the last few years, you probably have noticed that I no longer have a photo gallery. I moved my entire site over to Graffiti , and the software simply does not have a photo gallery. Also, I thought that a photo gallery is something that is probably more appropriate for VanJon, since a lot of pictures that I take involve Vanessa as well. Sure, I've been using Flickr as the host for my photos, but I did like having a way to view the pictures without leaving...

Taking responsibility for dismal results

Family star may head Toyota in crisis One thing that struck me about this article was this - "Unlike their Western counterparts, Japanese executives are widely expected to resign to take responsibility for dismal results." It seems that the American CEO's like to blame the "economy" or "market conditions" for poor results in a company. Sure, the economy is in the crapper right now, but our executives do seem to prefer to shirk blame instead of taking responsibility for...

Clueless Mike Brown

From this "interview" with Mike Brown one thing is apparent: Mike Brown still doesn't get it and will never get it. He is "pleased" with the effort of the players and the coaches because he is still making a tidy profit from this "NFL" franchise. Is there a more incompetent owner in all of sports? It's a shame that he brings new meaning to the "Brown" family name....
