Fascinating

I've been working in town for a month now, and since I am working in northern Kentucky I get to travel across several of our glorious expressways. I-75 to the Norwood Lateral (OH 562) to I-71 to I-471. Because of this, I have been paying a little more attention to traffic patterns, thinking about ways to improve our infrastructure, and of course - wondering about the history of the Cincinnati area highway system. In my searches, I came across a pretty cool site - Cincinnati Transit. There was some pretty interesting things in there, at least if you are interested in highways and other modes of transportation around this area. One particular part of the website was rather interesting - the abandoned subway. I had known for awhile that the city had started building a subway back in the early 1900's, but I had not realized how much work they had actually gotten done. It did make me wonder what the city would have been like if the subway had been completed. As such, there is no way that the subway system would have been enough with the way things are now. It really didn't get further north than Norwood, and that doesn't come close to solving the major reasons for traffic backups now - cars coming from the sprawl towns of West Chester, Mason, and others up north. But, I can't help but wonder what might have been.

it can be quicker to come all the way downtown and cross from 75 to 471 there instead of using the lateral. something to try, anyway.

yeah, one of my biggest beefs when i moved down here was the atrocious traffic engineering (or lack thereof). those were some of the first cincinnati / ohio related internet searches i performed. nada. good link, thanks.

so does detroit, sort of. it's a loop around the downtown area. they call it the "mugger mover".

of course, this is all very helpful to cincinnati commuters ;-p
