Last night was the first week of the spring softball session, 2009. I am on two teams for the spring session, and both teams play on Friday nights. Apparently the schedule makers at Rumpke were able to accommodate teams who are in two leagues on the same night, so there we are. It was a pretty good first night - we lost the first game and won the second. The first game we were decent on defense, other than one inning where we just had a breakdown. I found out from my brother that we are playing softball on Friday nights again, our first game will be on April 24th.  We will still be playing at Rumpke Ballpark , which is a bit longer of a drive than I would like, but at least I do get to play with both of my brothers again.  Luckily that gives me a couple of weeks to hit the batting cages and get in a “softball frame of mind”, whatever that means.  Let’s play ball!...

Yeah, softball ended about two months ago. However, my blogging about it was inconsistent at best, so for the sake of posterity I thought I would offer up a wrap-up post. We ended the first session tied for second place, I believe our final record was 6 - 3. Overall we had a pretty good year, especially since we never seemed to have the same team show up week after week. The team manager arranged to never have more than 10 players show up for a game, so every week there was at least one different...

I haven't updated softball in awhile... oops. I guess I've been taking to twitter to update the games. Regardless, tonight was the second week of the summer session, and we won 10 - 4. Last week we were off due to the holiday, and the week before I don't even remember. We had a solid game all around. We had our last game of the spring session last night, and it was ugly. We did play one of the better teams in the league, and we ended up losing by 2. Our hitting was great, as it has been most of the time. But the rest of our game was poor, at best. There were numerous fielding errors - physical as well as mental. And there were a few running errors as well. The mental errors are what got us - a lot of guys just didn't seem to have their head in the right place. We were close the whole time (trading...

Once again, I played for the Tuesday team, as they started the summer session. I got to play another new position for this year as I played first base. Not really my favorite position, since there isn't too much action, but I did get to make a couple of plays in the field (other than getting throws for the force out). At the plate I went 2 for 3, with a walk and a long sacrifice fly out. My hits were ok, but I'm still not hitting the ball the way that I want - my only really hard hit was the fly...

I filled in for the Tuesday softball team again last night. I pitched, and we won 9 - 0. It was pretty cool being able to pitch a shutout, although a big reason for that was the good fielding behind me. Defense was definitely on. Hitting was decent, but not nearly as good as it has been on Friday nights. At the plate I only went 1 for 3, with two deep (but routine) fly balls for my two outs. Straight and to the point, we rocked. We won in four innings 21 - 2. Our opponent did not play very good defense, and outside of a couple of players they did not hit very well either. Besides our opponent's shortcomings, we played very well. Our offense continued its tear, with pretty much everyone hitting solid line drives. The defense was pretty good after suffering through some errors in the first inning. But hey, we were good enough to only allow two runs, can't complain about that. I pitched...

The Tuesday night team needed a sub, so I dutifully stepped in to play some ball. Vanessa and I are going on vacation in a couple of days, so I was glad to play since I will be missing on Friday. I was worried for awhile that we would get rained out tonight. Luckily, the rain stayed away and we did get to play ball. For the first time all year, we had to play the entire 7 innings. Our opponent was decent - they were solid in the field and had some pretty good hitters. They were leading us for the first three innings until we started hitting.
